| January 3: Let's start the new year off with some gore! Took Soren to the batting cage on Milpas Street. We were hitting softballs with his small aluminum bat, and then we ran out of tokens. Bought some more, but our cage was now occupied, so we went to a different one. As it turns out, this one had no slow-pitch – only fastballs. I backed Soren away and we watched as ninety-mph hummers zipped by. Of course I got the bright idea to try to hit one. Whiffed the first two, made decent contact with the third, then made the contact below with the fourth: peeled my skin back and broke the bone. Good one, MikeyMike. Missed several good winter swells because of the wound and splint. The rest of the year was much better, as you will see. |
| January 8: Soren is a superstar at the Santa Barbara Rock Gym. The folks there are amazed at how effortlessly he scales big-boy routes |

| February: I've been visiting Annie Lorimer, who was my mom's best friend and who has known me from infancy, regularly. She moved later this year from her home on the Riviera to Vista Del Monte, and I see her there every week. |
