2010 - 2012

October 2010: Who is this Scorsese-browed gent with the starched button-down shirt and wry half-smile and bad toupee? While the other events in this document were happening, I was also acting the mild-mannered UCSB Professor for over thirty years. As much as I disliked academic bureaucracy, especially while Co-Director of the Writing Program, I loved being in the classroom and engaging students in discussion about literary texts and their own creative writing ...

... and then would find a convenient phone booth, throw off the professorial costume, and emerge: in this case as lead guitarist at an Iron Curtain retrospective at S0h0 SB w/Steve Fields

While on a low tide beach walk together, Francie took this shot of me at the "jailhouse," a constantly evolvoing graffiti art site at Devereux, aka Coal Oil Point, 2011

The two of us from that same walk – looks like decent waves at the point in the background!

This probably qualifies as Too Much Information, but here is the happy test result that got the fatherly ball rolling, so to speak. The phrase "within normal limits" was the key to moving forward with babymaking. May, 2012

Carl and Irene Herzig checking out the surf at Hobson's. Tide wrong, so we headed south.

Ended up at Mandos Cove for Irene's first surf

Irene is a natural and was riding all the way to shore almost immediately; she is about to pop up next to me in this photo. July 2011

Mandos is well known for being a slow, generally small, crumbly, non-tubular wave, and it is ... but I'll take any day on a wave, as long as the reef isn't taking a bite out of me. Fun overcast morning with Irene and Carl.

... and then the sun came out!

Before the funk zone got gentrified, with hotels and wine bars, it really was funky, as the poster for a 2011 gig illustrates. Our Bunnyhead rehearsal space was literally across the street from the Marborg waste treatment facility. Not to wax boho-snobbish: there's nothing inherently wrong with a wine bar, but I'll take the fine nose of a good sewage plant any day.

A view from inside said funk zone rehearsal space

I love this September 2012 shot of Jade and Eric

Concluding 2012 with me, Annie and Beth at a Hjelstrom birthday party at El Capitan point, just a few months before babyboy numero uno enters the picture, and the most amazing KirbyFam chapter opens and continues to unfold
